windows-81-update-fails-install-numerous-users-generates-complaints-and-frustration

Microsoft rolled out Windows 8.1 Update on April 8th, promising to bring numerous new improvements to non-touch users. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to snag the update and install it successfully. Users are apparently receiving errors 80070020, 80073712, 0x80071a91, and 0x800f081f, creating frustration and causing complaints.

"I've tried both installing from windows update and downloading the update package from MSDN and KB2919355 (Win 8.1 Update) fails to install in both cases. All of the related updates work fine or are already installed but this one gets nowhere after numerous attempts," one user states on Microsoft's official support forum. "Words cannot describe my frustration," another user states.

Apparently, users are experiencing an error preventing the installation of Windows 8.1 Update, which weighs in over 700MB in size. Sometimes the update reaches 99% and ends up reverting and requiring a restart. Microsoft, thus far, as rolled out one solution. If your installation fails with error code 0x80071a91 while attempting to install update 2919355 via Windows Update, head over here for the solution.

Here's another possible fix that seems to be working for a few users:

Run CMD as administator (Go to start screen, all apps, search CMD, right-click and select run as administrator)Enter: dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14When step 2 has completed, enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanupRetry the update!

Windows 8.1 Update was intended to be easier to download and install via Windows Update - at least that was the intended plan from Microsoft. For those that remember, installing the previous update (Windows 8.1) from the Windows Store was a nightmare. Microsoft elected to offer the latest update via the company's Windows Update method, during April's Patch Tuesday.

We've reached out to Microsoft for a statement on the matter. Have you faced any issues getting the update installed? Sound off in the comments below.
